Lime & Grit

Eggshell material

Lime is important

Hatching eggs

Hens need enough lime to produce eggshells for laying. This is best provided in the form of grit. These are burnt and ground mussel shells, the lime components of which the hens need to build up the eggshell. It also contains other vital minerals. If the hens do not get enough lime to produce shells, this can lead to so-called diaper eggs. These are eggs with a very thin shell or no shell at all. It can also happen that the hens break down their own bones in order to use the material they contain for the shells. Although this is detrimental to their health. Before this happens, however, they keep their eyes open for other sources of lime and peck at the corners of walls with lime plaster.

Offer charcoal

If you mean well with the poultry, you can also add a handful of small crumbled pieces of charcoal to the grit. This helps the chickens with diarrhea and they can help themselves freely depending on how they feel. It’s just like the charcoal tablets from the pharmacy for us humans.
