Soda chickens are chickens that are breedless or crossbreeds. In other words, any chicken that was simply born as a crossbreed without any breeding intentions and its offspring. Example: the farmer has 10 different breeds of chickens, they have wild, uninhibited sex and multiply. These offspring mix with each other again and again. The chickens that the farmer then had were just “there”, hence the strange name.
Escaped animals that may have found mates in the wild and continue to reproduce also produce such chickens. Similar to stray dogs whose offspring are popularly called “street dogs”.
