General information about the Wyandotte

Unfortunately, it is not known exactly which breeds were involved in the creation of the Wyandotte, but Cochins are almost certainly involved. They originated in the USA and there have been reports of such chickens since the 1860s. They were known under various names, e.g. American Sebrights or Excelsiors. Wyandottes belong to the laying breeds. This breed is rare and has been added to the Red List of endangered livestock breeds.

Appearance of Wyandottes

Wyandottes are bred in about 30 different colors, below we list some of them. Beaks and legs are yellow in color. Red-brown eyes, red wattles and a red rose comb are typical of the breed. The cocks weigh up to 3.8 kg.
