Keeping of Welsumers
The animals do not make any special demands on their keeping and are a very robust breed. They like a large run and as they are somewhat lighter than other members of their species, they can flap quite well. If they have a large run available, they forage for themselves for the most part.
Character of Welsumers
They are lively and curious contemporaries but not “hyperactive”, they are nevertheless calm and good-natured. These hens do not tend to quarrel at all. The hens rarely get into a breeding mood, but there are exceptions here too.
Eggs from Welsum hens
The hens lay up to 160 dark brown eggs per year weighing up to 80g. However, the shell color is not as dark as that of the Marans.
