General information about the Rhodeländer

The Rhodelanders, a laying breed, were bred in the second half of the 19th century in the United States, more precisely in the state of Rhode Island. Their ancestors include Cochins and Malays. They are also known as Rhode Island Red. In America, for example, red and white representatives of this breed are regarded as two different chicken breeds.

Appearance of rhodelanders

The red birds have single or rose combs, the white birds, which are only recognized in a few countries, must have rose combs.
In most countries, breeders limit themselves to the red colour, so white is rather rare. The cocks, whether red or white, weigh approx. 4 kg.

Keeping rhodelanders

Due to their weight, Rhode Island Reds don’t tend to fly, they could but don’t bother. So you don’t need a fence that is too high for these somewhat cozier chickens. They feel just as comfortable in enclosures as they do in the run. If you want to keep several cockerels – not a problem with this breed – they urgently need a lot more space and, of course, enough ladies.

Character of Rhodelands

Rhodeländer are very calm, friendly and good-natured chickens that become hand-tame very quickly. They are also very robust and vital, making them the perfect breed for beginners!

Eggs from Rhodeland hens

Rhode Island Red hens lay approx. 200 light brown eggs of approx. 60g but this not only in the first year but also reliably in the second. These pullets start laying at the age of 4-5 months.
