General information about the Orpington

Orpingtons were bred at the end of the 19th century by an Englishman from Orpington, who created a laying breed with them. Their ancestors include Croad Langschans, Minorkas, Langschans and Plymouth Rocks. The Langschans in particular have strongly influenced this breed. However, modern Orpis are no longer comparable with any of the original breeds. There is also a duck breed of the same name. This chicken breed is rare and has been added to the Red List of endangered livestock breeds.

Appearance of Orpingtons

The first thing you notice is their size and weight, but they are not only large but also very broad. The rather loose plumage and short legs reinforce this impression – similar to the Cochins. They have a red single comb, large red wattles and the ear discs are also red. Darker colors have darker beaks and legs – lighter colors have lighter beaks and legs. Males of this breed weigh an impressive 4 kg.

Keeping Orpingtons

They can be kept free-range or in enclosures . However, they need a dry, clean roost: their belly feathers get wet because of their short legs and must be able to dry off well. It would also be nice if the animals did not have to walk in mud, otherwise they will get a muddy belly. You should also make sure that the enclosure is “escape-proof”, as their curiosity means they always want to explore everything.

Character of Orpingtons

They are very calm, curious and affectionate animals that quickly become tame if well cared for. Sometimes they can be almost too affectionate and run after you all the time. Orpingtons easily get into the breeding mood and then become excellent hens.

Eggs from Orpington hens

Orpingtons lay an average of around 200 light brown/cream-colored eggs, which are quite small compared to their size at 53g.
