General information about the Bergischer Kräher

Bergischer Kräher, the breed bred in Germany – more precisely in the Duchy of Berg – is one of the oldest breeds belonging to the long-crowned breed. They used to be called “Kräher über den Berg”. It is assumed that the Bergisch crow belongs to the ancestors of the Brazilian crow. This chicken breed is rare and has been added to the Red List of endangered livestock breeds.

Keeping of mountain cranes

Cranes can fly well and need a lot of space, so a small enclosure is not an option for this breed. They have remained very original, so they are vigilant animals and good foragers. Predators have almost no chance of catching these agile chickens if you offer them enough hiding places. They also take good care of the house and yard.

Character of Bergisch crows

They will never become so trusting that you can touch them, but with patience and treats they will at least eat out of their owner’s hand. However, they will remain shy towards visitors and strangers. The Bergisch Kräher are very active and always need something to do so that they don’t get bored. Unfortunately, their breeding instinct is almost non-existent, but the eggs are suitable for artificial breeding.

Eggs from Bergisch Kräher chickens

The hens do not have a high egg production and lay 130, white eggs weighing approx. 55g. In terms of egg laying, they are late bloomers; it can take up to 8 months for the hens to lay their first egg. Even in winter, the egg production is unfortunately poor.
