General information from the Niederrheiner

Niederrheiner are a meat breed that were bred in the Lower Rhine region at the end of the 1920s. Their ancestors are the Noord Holland chicken, Orpingtons, Mechelen and Plymouth Rocks.

Appearance of Niederrheiners

The representatives of this breed have a red single comb, red wattles and red ear discs. The legs are unfeathered and flesh-colored. The eyes are orange-red in color. The beaks are flesh-colored and can also have slate-grey markings. Roosters of this breed can weigh up to 4.5 kg.

Keeping the Lower Rhine

They don’t like flying very much, so the fence doesn’t have to be too high. However, this breed tends to put on fat quickly, so they should have as much exercise as possible. If you spread the food over a large area on the ground, they will always be on the move. A very robust breed that is otherwise not very demanding.

Character of Niederrheiners

With good care, Rhinelanders quickly become tame and trusting. They have a calmer disposition. The hens only have a low breeding instinct.
