General information about the Faverolles
Several breeds were involved in the development of the Faverolles, also known as the German salmon chicken. These include Brahmas, Dorkings and Houdans. Salmon chickens have a number of special features that make them so unique. They belong to the meat breeds. This chicken breed is rare and has been added to the Red List of endangered livestock breeds.
Appearance of salmon chickens
They have bearded feathers with a ruff on the head. While other breeds have 4 toes, the salmon hen has 5 toes. The body feathers are very dense and soft. The eyes are orange-red, they have short flesh-colored legs, which are feathered as well as the outermost toe. They have inherited this 5th toe from the Dorkings. The single comb and the face are red, the beaks light yellow. The cocks can weigh up to 4 kg.

Keeping salmon chickens
These cute chickens can also be kept in small enclosures , but you have to be careful because they can easily get too fat. In small enclosures, the food bowl should be emptied at least 2 hours before the next feeding. Of course, they also like to live outdoors, but the enclosure does not need to be too high, as the animals usually keep both feet on the ground. Grass-free runs are not suitable for this breed, as they will otherwise get muddy legs due to their strong leg and foot feathering.
Character of Faverolles
Salmon hens are a very affectionate, calm and docile breed, which quickly gain confidence in their owner if well cared for. This breed rarely gets into a breeding mood, but even here – exceptions prove the rule.
Eggs from Faverolles hens
The fluffy little animals lay approx. 160 light brown to brown eggs weighing approx. 55g. They also do this quite reliably in winter.
