Information on the Drenther chicken breed
Original, colorful domestic chicken
General information about the Drenther
Drente in the Netherlands is the place of origin of this laying breed, which belongs to the large fowl family. Little is known about their ancestors, but there are clear similarities with the Bankavia chicken. It is assumed that they, like the Friesian hen, originated from European wild breeds. The Drenther was not recognized as a breed by the BDRG.
Appearance of Drenthers
The red single comb and red wattles, as well as the white ear flaps, are typical of this breed. Like the Araucana, for example, this breed is available with or without a tail. The unfeathered legs are gray. The proud cocks weigh in at 2 kg.

Attitude of Drenthers
Drenthers are very grateful for plenty of space and exercise. They are good foragers and all in all a very robust and vital breed. Otherwise, they do not make any special demands when it comes to keeping them.
Character of Drenthers
These chickens are a very shy breed and unfortunately will not become tame with much effort. The ladies of this breed are very good breeders and mothers.
Eggs from Drenthe hens
The hens lay approx. 120 eggs weighing approx. 43g per year.
