Information on the Australorp chicken breed
Loose Australians
General information about the Australorp
The Australorp was bred in Australia at the beginning of the 20th century from Orpingtons and Croad Langschans, among others, as a dual-purpose breed and is still one of the more common breeds to be found today.
Appearance of Australorps
The best known color of this breed is the black, whose plumage shimmers greenish, bluish to purple in the sun. However, some black young birds still have scattered white feathers. The large single crest, wattles and face are colored red, the iris brown to brown-black and the beak black. The legs are gray to gray-blue and have a white sole. The cocks of this large chicken breed weigh up to 3.5 kg.

Attitude of Australorps
Australorps are not bad flyers, which is why you should make sure you have a man-high fence when building an enclosure. As they are quite lively, it is also advisable to plan a little more space in the enclosure.
Character of Australorps
Australorps are a rather lively breed, but peaceful towards other chickens, and with a little patience they adapt well to the owner. They have a calm temperament, so that even several young roosters can be raised together. The hens are good hens that are well suited for brooding.
Eggs from Australorp hens
Australorps lay a relatively large number of light brown eggs for a large chicken breed with good meat characteristics. The hens start laying relatively early.
