Information on the Assendelfter chicken breed
Light-footed Dutchmen
General information about the Assendelfter
Assendelfters have been kept in Holland for centuries, but unfortunately their exact origin is unknown. This breed belongs to the speckled hens and was not recognized by the BDRG.
Appearance of Assendelftern
They are very similar in type to the Friesian hen. Their head is adorned with a fairly large rose crest with quite a few large tubercles. Like the eyes, the small earlobes are orange-red. The legs are grayish and the beaks light yellow. Male Dutchmen weigh around 2.5 kg on the scales.

Keeping of Assendelftern
They need a lot of space and are best kept free-range. Foraging has become second nature to them.
Character of Assendelftern
These strong chickens are very energetic and are busy all day with something, namely scratching and looking for food. They tend to have a calmer disposition but become “bad-tempered” if they don’t have enough to do. That’s why a large run is a must for these pretty little ones. However, they rarely get into a breeding mood.
Eggs from Assendel hens
The hens lay 180 cream-colored eggs weighing approx. 50g per year.
