Information on the Ardennes chicken breed
Old Belgians
General information about the Ardennes
Ardennes are probably the oldest chicken breed from Belgium. Unfortunately, it remains unknown exactly how they originated and which ancestors they have.
Appearance of Ardennes
Like the Araucanas, they are available with or without a tail. The head is adorned with a single crest, ear lobes and facial skin are purple-red, as are the wattles. The iris is dark brown with frequent black rings. The legs and beaks are very dark, almost black in color. Ardennes cockerels weigh approx. 2.5 kg.

Keeping Ardennes
The large breed is simply not suitable for enclosures . They are excellent fliers and prefer to sleep in trees at night. These hardy animals can take care of themselves to a high degree. If you value something special and want to keep these animals primarily for their genetic make-up, they are a good choice. They make hardly any demands when it comes to feeding, as they look for most of their food themselves if they have enough free space.
Character of Ardennes
They are very vital, lively and robust country chickens that are best left to run free. They tend not to become hand-tame, but they are not shy chickens and can become quite trusting if kept well. The breeding instinct is not very pronounced.
Eggs from Ardennes hens
The hens lay approx. 190, 60g white eggs per year.
