Information on the Annaberger Haubenstrupphuhn chicken breed

Struwwelpeter

General information about the Annaberg crested partridge

The Annaberger Haubenstrupphuhn was bred in 1957 in Annaberg, which is located in the Ore Mountains. Their ancestors are Chabos, silk chickens, Brabanter and Appenzeller Spitzhauben. Unfortunately, this great breed is becoming increasingly rare.

Appearance of Annaberg crested grouse

Ruffed grouse have a somewhat amusing appearance, which is due to the fact that their feathers curl slightly backwards. The cap on the head completes the “exploded” appearance. The ear discs are always white, the wattles and the crest of the horns – if you could see it – are always red. The legs are light gray to slate gray. The beaks are light gray. Shaggy cocks weigh up to 1.5 kg.

Husbandry of Annaberg crested cockerels

Shaggy hens always need a shelter that protects their sensitive plumage from moisture. Unfortunately, they are generally not as robust as other chicken breeds. Either you provide them with a run that is largely protected from the wind and weather or you should choose a more weatherproof breed. However, they are not suitable for keeping indoors, they love to be outside. Apart from that, however, they do not make any demands in terms of housing. Flying is not their thing either.

Character of Annaberg crested grouse

Shaggy hens are quite a curious breed but also friendly in nature. With a little patience, eating from the hand will not be a problem, but cuddling is unlikely to be. Shaggy hens have hardly any breeding instinct.

Eggs from Annaberg crested hens

Hens lay 46g, white to yellow eggs and about 120 of them.
