Information on the Ancona chicken breed

Quirky multi-purpose

General information about Ancona

This breed takes its name from the Italian province of the same name, Ancona. Due to its relationship to the Leghorn, it is also known as the black Leghorn. The chickens arrived in Great Britain in the 19th century. This large breed belongs to the laying hens but was not recognized as a breed by the BDRG.

Appearance of Anconas

In young chickens, the white patches are not yet very pronounced, but become stronger and more pronounced from moult to moult. Characteristic features of this breed are the yellow legs and beaks. They have a large red single comb, which is slightly tilted to one side at the rear end in laying hens. The ear discs are light in color. There are also flocks that have a rose comb, but this is rather rare. The cocks can weigh up to 2.8 kg.

Keeping Anconas

The animals are excellent flyers, which must be taken into account when choosing these cheeky animals. A high enclosure is a must for these very active chickens.

Character of Anconas

They are regarded as attractive, small, perky, yet robust chickens with a weakly developed breeding instinct. With good care, they become very trusting but probably not tame.

Eggs from Ancona hens

The hens lay up to 250 white eggs weighing approx. 50g per year.
