The large breed

how big is big?!

Large breeds are generally all chicken breeds that are not dwarf breeds or primitive dwarfs. Among the large breeds there are chickens that only weigh around 1 kg and dwarf breeds such as the dwarf Brahma with 1.3 kg – sounds strange, but that’s how it is. This may be a little confusing for you, so let me say: the word large breed does not automatically mean a 5 kg chicken that rolls through the garden like a tank. This is because the weight spectrum of large breeds ranges from 1kg to 5kg. So if the chicken is not explicitly labeled as a dwarf chicken or a great dwarf, it belongs to the large breeds.

When we talk about a "normal-sized chicken" in the articles, e.g. in terms of stocking density in the coop or run, we are referring to the medium weights among the large breeds. Chickens that weigh 2.5kg - 3kg on average.

There is a dwarf form – bred by humans – of almost every large breed.
