Speckled hens

Interesting plumage
A mottled grouse with black and white feathers

Speckled chickens are a group of chicken breeds – mostly from Europe – that have typical gold-black or silver-black feather markings. The Friesian hen shows very clearly that there are more than just these two variations.

A mottled hen is usually a very good egg supplier with around 200 eggs per year. They are often rather lighter specimens and not meat chickens, with the exception of the Groningen gull.

The plumage pattern is extremely striking, with the feathers having a typical band-like pattern. Speckled hens have no markings on the neck. Depending on the breed and age, the mottling may be completely absent in cocks.
